The Pontiac GTO was a car categorized into the muscle class of cars and was produced by General Motors from 1964 until 1974. It was once again built by General Motors Holden from 2004 until 2006 and assembled in Australia. These cars were imported to the United States, but in 2006 the imports were first stopped and production was discontinued shortly thereafter.

The Pontiac GTO came in 3 different body styles. Only 2 door bodies were ever made and they came as convertibles, hardtop convertibles or as 2 door sedans. The GTO was a controversial car of the Pontiac division, because it broke a few regulations, and one of them was that a car produced by a part of the General Motors company could not use an engine larger than 5.4 L on an A-body platform, however the GTO had engines up to 6.5 L. No action was ever taken because Pontiac reasoned that the GTO is a special trim edition and not a regular model car, so it was considered as an exception based on the loophole excuse.

In 2004 the Holden group in Australia revived the Pontiac GTO on its Monaro V platform and it went down in history as production was stopped for good, because it was the last coupe to ever be built on this Monaro platform.
