The Pontiac Firebird had an endless variety of engines from all different GM partners. In total there were around 40 different engines that were used for the Firebird, and although some were only V6, most of them were V8. Starting from 1993 and up until the end in 2002, there was actually an electronically controlled limit on the end speed so that the driver could not give completely full gas. One should consider though, that speed was capped at 155 mph, which is already quite a bit more than the average speed limit.
