Pontiac Catalina
The Pontiac Catalina was a full sized car that was produced by General Motors from 1950 until 1981. In the beginning the designation Catalina did not refer to a separate Pontiac model, but was a name that referred to all hardtop convertibles from 1950 until 1958 of the so-called Chieftain line. It was discontinued in 1981 mostly because of its size since the trend towards smaller, more fuel efficient cars was underway. Although it was no longer suitable for the times, Pontiac had already sold more than 3,800,000 of the Catalinas between 1959 and 1981.
Starting in 1959 when the Pontiac Catalina became its own model car, there were many models available. The best selling body style of the Catalina was the pillared 4 door sedan, although there were others available such as 2 and 4 door hardtops, the convertible and even a station wagon.There were many engines available, but for the most part the Pontiac Catalina was equipped with a powerful V8. This was all right until the oil crisis came along and the industry had to start changing to keep customers and comply with new fuel regulations. The year 1977 started the problems for the Catalina when it was actually banned in California because of its V8 engine and bad emissions ratings, which forced Pontiac to use alternatives from other General Motors divisions.
