The Pontiac Catalina was a full sized car that was produced by General Motors from 1950 until 1981. In the beginning the designation Catalina did not refer to a separate Pontiac model, but was a name that referred to all hardtop convertibles from 1950 until 1958 of the so-called Chieftain line. It was discontinued in 1981 mostly because of its size since the trend towards smaller, more fuel efficient cars was underway. Although it was no longer suitable for the times, Pontiac had already sold more than 3,800,000 of the Catalinas between 1959 and 1981.

The year 1977 started the problems for the Catalina when it was actually banned in California because of its V8 engine and bad emissions ratings, which forced Pontiac to use alternatives from other General Motors divisions.
