The Mazda 626 was first produced in 1979 and was built up until 2002 by Mazda and the Auto Alliance International. It was a good seller and had even won many awards around the world and even had the distinction of being the "Import of the Year" in the United States. Until 1988 it was assembled solely in Japan and then until 2002 it was assembled in both Japan and the United States. When it was discontinued in 2002 there had been already more than 4 million cars of this model built.
