Originally the name Newport was used to identify a show car which was exhibited in 1940. However this car was not produced, but instead the Chrysler Corporation built five different cars that were based on this conceptual model.

From 1940 until 1941 the first model was known as the Chrysler Newport Phaeton and was built as a 2 door roadster with a powerful engine and a three speed manual transmission. The second generation of this car from 1949-1950 was actually based on the New Yorker, Town and Country, Windsor and Saratoga and the name Newport was given only to the hardtop models with 2 door styling of all these cars.The third through the sixth generations of the Chrysler Newport came in many different models and body styles. It was classified as a full sized car and there were a wide range of body styles, from 2 door coupe to 4 door sedan, hard top convertible and even station wagons.
