Toyota Tercel
The Toyota Tercel was a popular and affordable so-called entry level car, which was available from 1978 to 1999. It is categorized as being a subcompact vehicle and is closely related to the Toyota Paseo, Starlet and the Corolla. It uses the same platform as the Paseo and Starlet and as a result many replacement parts can be substituted and exchanged. The name Tercel comes from Latin and means "one third" which refers to the smaller size as compared to the Corolla. The Toyota Tercel was solely produced at the Takaoka plant in Japan.
The Tercel was referred to and known under many names, such as Corolla Tercel, Corsa, Corolla II, Tercel Windy and Soluna. Although first sold in 1978, it was available only in Japan. First in 1980 did the Toyota Tercel make its way to the United States and was then introduced to the market. Through its twenty year history it underwent many changes, improvements and appeared in many variations. A total of five different body styles were made, them being the 2 door coupe, 3 door hatchback, 4 door sedan, 4 door hatchback, and 4 door station wagon. There was also a wide range transmissions to choose from for the Tercel, ranging from 3 speed automatic to a six speed manual or automatic. All together Toyota produced five generations of the Tercel.
