The Toyota Starlet was a subcompact car produced by Toyota from 1973 up to 1999 and was the replacement model for the Publica. There were five series produced, known as the 40, 60, 70, 80 and 90 series. The original cars of the 40 series from 1973 to 1977 were 2 or 4 door sedans. The successor models of the 60 series were first introduced in 1978 and were now available as 3 or 5 door hatchbacks, and there was even a 5 door station wagon variation available. The KP61 version of this series was the only Toyota Starlet to have been sold in the United States and that was only between 1981 and 1984. It was then replaced by the Toyota Corolla in 1985.

The Toyota Starlet was mostly sold in Japan (Asia generally) and Europe. The last and most modern models of the 90 series were first introduced in 1996 and were available in Europe. Production ended in 1999 and the Toyota Starlet was discontinued. It was replaced by a new line of models known under the names of Yaris, Vitz, Platz or Echo.

The Toyota Starlet had a good reputation for being a dependable, small car. This is what made it so popular in Asia and Europe. There were, however, attempts made to make the Toyota Starlet a sportier vehicle through superchargers and butterfly doors. One example was the Sera from the early 1990's.
