Toyota RAV4
The Toyota RAV4, which name actually is an abbreviation for its real title "recreation activity vehicle, 4 wheel drive", was first introduced to the Japanese market in 1994. Two years later it came out on the American market. Its popularity is based on the fact that it is neither SUV nor compact car, but offers the best features of both, which also explains why it is classified as a compact crossover SUV. It has benefits of a SUV such as the higher seating position and visibility, the all wheel drive (even though not all cars have the 4WD, it is an option) and a larger cargo capacity. On the other hand, it offers features of a compact car, such as the higher mileage per gallon of gas and is easier to maneuver.
There is also a Toyota RAV4 EV available, which is an electrical version of this car.
There have been three generations of Toyota RAV4 as of today. The first two generations, from 1994 up to 2005, were based on a Corolla platform and were manufactured solely in the Tahara, Aichi plant in Japan. The third, and most recent generation, has been in production since 2006 and the production has taken place in two Japanese plants, however, starting in 2008 a plant in Canada will be responsible for the production of all the North American models.
