Dodge Challenger

The Initial Dodge Challenger was introduced by Dodge division of Chrysler Corporation in the year 1970. This was a late entry for Chrysler in the pony car segment of the United States market.. The design was based on the similar Plymouth Barracuda's new E-body, but the wheelbase of Challenger, at 110 inches, was two inches longer and had significantly different outer sheet metal than Plymouth. The exterior was designed by Carl "CAM'" Cameron, who also designed the exterior for the 1966 model of Dodge Charger. For the first Challenger model grille, CAM based it on an older design of his of a 1966 Charger prototype. The Challenger was well received by the car buyers (with 80,000 sales in 1970 alone), it was severely criticized by the press, also the pony car segment was already declining by the time the Challenger was launched in the market. Challenger production stopped in the year 1975 model year, having been in production for a short span of five years; sales dropped off drastically after the 1971. About 165,500 cars were sold during the Challenger's lifespan. Three models went on market during this five year period namely, Challenger Six, Challenger V8 and Challenger R/T. Challengers were available in either hardtops, coupes, or convertibles (from 1971 only).

The standard engine on the Challenger model featured the 225 in3 six-cylinder. Standard engine on the V8 was the 230 hp 318 in3 V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor. with a standard 3-speed manual transmission, except for the 290 hp 383 in3 engine, which was available only with the TorqueFlite automatic transmission.
