Chevy El Camino
The Chevy El Camino was manufactured by General Motors from 1959 to 1987. The name, El Camino, comes from the Spanish word for road, and there mainly three models of this car sold, the Conquista, Super Sport and the regular version. Chevrolet came out with this model in order to keep up with the Ford company which had been producing the Ranchero, a similar car, and thus, competitor of the El Camino. However, Chevy was not able to compete with Ford during the first few years of production, and the sales statistics were not outstanding. The Chevy El Camino version of the late 1970's and 1980's was the most popular, however, the earlier models were now considered to be valuable and were even sold for high prices. This last version had been redesigned and was made smaller and even had diesel engines available between 1982 and 1984. In 1987 the production of the El Camino was discontinued, and that is mostly because of the pickup gaining popularity at that time.
This car was based on both pickup and sedan and is classified in the so-called "muscle class". From the General Motors Group there were also other models which were basically the same as the Chevy El Camino. There was first the GMC Sprint and starting in 1974, the GMC Caballero. Although production had stopped in 1987, it was rumored and even expected that General Motors would once again bring the El Camino back, however, there has been no real evidence of any plans.
