Toyota Van
The Toyota Van was marketed around the world under many different names and in different variations, but is always classified as a minivan. In the United States it was just referred to as Van, but in other places, such as in Europe, it was referred to as the Space Cruiser. It first introduced in 1984 and by 1989 it was already discontinued. There are two basic versions of this minivan, the one being a van which can only be used for transporting cargo and is called "Van", and the other version which has seats for passengers and is referred to as "Town Ace" or "Lite Ace". The Toyota Van was put out on the market at the same time as other minivans, such as the Chrysler Voyager, but was seriously behind on many features. One major drawback was the fact that maintenance and repair were difficult due to the disadvantageous location of the engine behind and in the middle of the front seats. In order to service the Van, the engine cover had to be removed from inside the passenger compartment, something that was not necessary for other minivans of the time.
A very distinctive feature of the Toyota Van is its front shape. The front slants sharply downward, which was something new for the Japanese at that time since all their other vans had protruding flat fronts. Another interesting fact about the Van is that it was in fact, very popular among families with Asian descent. A 1986 model of the Toyota Van was featured in 2005 on MTV's "Pimp my Ride", where it was totally remodeled.
