The name of Chevrolet and the attachment of SSR (super sport roadster) itself spell out the combination of speed style and comfort for an owner, initially launched as a convertible pickup truck, manufactured by the Chevrolet branch of American Automaker General Motors through the years of 2003 to 2006. The early models of 2003 to 2004 used the Vortec 5300 engine manufactured by General Motors. The later 2005 model of the Chevy SSR boasted of a 390 hp LS2 V8 which was in the other cars such as Pontiac GTO and the Corvette. It also offered a manual transmission as an innovation for the first time as an optional accessory. The latest 2006 model the minor modifications to the LS2 engine increased its output to 395hp while on automatic transmission and to 400 hp while on manual transmission respectively.
The model of the year 2004 had sold below expectations with just sales of below 9000, priced at US$42,000 each. The General Motors in December of that year announced a 5 week layoff where the factory for manufacturing SSR lay, giving the supply of 301 days of SSR. In 2005 on November 1st came the news from General Motors that the factory would cease production in the mid of 2006, clearing outlining the cutoff for the sparkly SSR. The estimate is that 24,150 SSR's were produced in all, of which 24112 were available to be sold to the public.
